Planning Document 1.0


This is the information from my planning 1.0 document. The goal of this document was to develop an initial idea for the project and organize it into a format you can follow throughout the project's lifespan. I updated this document to reflect changes in the concept, and I have included the newest version in this devlog. The original idea was very different from the final result, but utilized a lot of teleportation similar to the concept I landed on.

Planning 1.0

What experience do I want to share with the player?

  • -I have often imagined what it would be like to be present at the time of the events the objects in museums were present for. Making a digital museum provides an opportunity to create more immersive environments than real museums can, so I can emulate this feeling of imagining the past for the player.

  • -It is impossible to draw a complete map of the level because the player does not traverse it traditionally, so I will explain how they will move through it. The primary room of the museum will contain exhibits for every topic covered. This room will look like a small natural history museum and will contain short information boards about each topic. The exhibits and information boards will be lit up to draw the player’s attention to them. If the player approaches one of the information boards, it will seamlessly teleport them to an area that is meant to provide an immersive recreation of the setting of the exhibit in the main room. Each of these will be outdoor areas. The information board will still be present within these areas and they can return by approaching it again.

Explain thought process for building the level this way

  • -I want to surprise the players by making the museum larger than it appears on the surface. I want to spark their sense of curiosity and exploration by taking them places they were not expecting to go. This will be accomplished by drawing the player to the “doors” of other areas without them knowing that they are doors through lighting.
